Following her show-stopping performance of “Yoü And I,” Lady Gaga returned to the stage to honor pop singer Britney Spears with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. Still dressed as her male alter ego, Gaga said: “When I used to perform open mic nights for free. One of my biggest inspirations was Britney Spears. Britney taught me how to be fearless, she taught us all how to be fearless.”

Gaga left the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards with two awards: Best Female Video and Best Video With a Message for the Nick Knight-directed “Born THis Way.” In just three years, she earned 13 moonmen, becoming the award show’s second biggest-winning artist of all time, only behind Madonna.
